Want to learn how to help your students develop strategies without overwhelming them with a bunch of different ways to solve math problems?

In each of these LIVE monthly Math Strategy Sessions, Rosalba will help you develop your own understanding of a math strategy that works for all 4 operations (we are talking long-term strategies that work, not tricks).  You will learn how to help your students develop the strategy, get practice with understanding the usefulness of it, and how to create math experiences that help your students understand the strategy so that they can use it when needed.  You will get practice creating practice problems, word problems, number routines, and even see some games that help students use, and understand, math strategies.

These Math Strategy Sessions are free to attend the live session done via Zoom.  Replays are only available inside the Build Math Minds PD site for members to access.

If Math Strategies are directly taught to kids they just become another algorithm the kids need to learn and memorize.  Instead, kids should build an understanding of how numbers work and the strategies so they know when it’s appropriate to use a strategy and when it isn’t.

Each month we will help you dig into a common strategy that works for Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, & Division...yes these strategies work on all 4 operations!  These strategies aren’t tricks, they are based on the properties of number & place value and will help your students become fluent with the operations without getting confused by 8 different ways to solve a problem. They will learn strategies that last long term and learn how & when to use them.

In these LIVE Math Strategy Sessions, Rosalba will lay a foundation for you to know what the strategy is, how it works, and what it looks like for each of the 4 operations with all different sets of numbers.  You will then learn how to help your students practice the routine, create expressions in which that strategy is actually useful, and learn how to help your students know when the strategy is useful.  You will also practice how to write story problems and create number routines that help students develop the strategy.  We will also discuss a math game that gives students practice with the strategy.

It is free to attend the live session.  Replays are only available inside the Build Math Minds PD site for members to access.

Strategies are useful in ALL grade levels.

These strategies last long term and help kids become thinkers, not just do-ers of math.

Create expressions of your own & Identify expressions that are not useful - Learn what types of expressions work well with the strategy and which don’t, you will have time to create expressions that using the strategy is helpful

Create a word problem around the expression you created - Spend time looking at and creating word problems that your students can relate to AND use numbers that work well with the strategy

Practice Number Routines - Spend time looking at and creating number routines that will help develop the strategy

Get some Game examples - Spend time looking at and creating games that allow kids time to practice using the strategy
