Number Sense in PreK-2 – $97

with Christina Tondevold

Number Sense can’t be taught, it’s caught. In this course you will learn fun ways to build your kiddos’ number sense in PreK-2nd grade. We will investigate how to build the number sense concepts along with how it makes math content so much easier. You will walk away knowing how to assess your students’ number sense, how to help them catch the number sense concepts, and how to help them use that number sense in other areas of math.

This is a paid course and will be four hours of instruction delivered over two sessions on February 5 & 12. If you are unable to attend the live session, the recording will be emailed to all enrolled participants. To see all the details about what’s included in the course go HERE.

Mathematical Games in the Classroom – Grades PreK-2 – $57

with Dan Finkel

Games are a natural and effective way for young students to learn mathematics. By playing with quantity, shape, and numerical models, students build a robust understanding of mathematical concepts while having a fantastic time. In this mini-course, we’ll explore how to make Play The Engine of Learning by investigating what makes a great game, how to use them in the classroom to best effect, and what & how students learn as they play. We’ll also share some of favorites games you can play with standard classroom materials, and some of the thinking that went into designing Tiny Polka Dot, the hit game for 3 – 8 year olds.

This is a paid course and will be two hours of instruction delivered in one session on February 19. If you are unable to attend the live session, the recording will be emailed to all enrolled participants. To see all the details about what’s included in the course go HERE.

Mathematical Games in the Classroom 3rd-5th – $57

with Dan Finkel

Properly taught, games encourage a playful, engaging experience with mathematical ideas, and can motivate skills practice and exploration of deeper concepts. Dan will help you see how Play is The Engine of Learning by showing you a range of ways to use games in the classroom, and explore how his collection of favorite games can create a more robust understanding of arithmetic, estimation, strategic thinking, and more.

This paid course will be two hours of instruction delivered in one session on February 26. If you are unable to attend the live session, the recording will be emailed to all enrolled participants. To see all the details about what’s included in the course go HERE.

Word Problem Types Involving Addition and Subtraction – $57

with Ann Elise Record

Word problem solving has traditionally been one of the most difficult aspects of math to teach. Thankfully, there is research that supports a progression of teaching various problem types that helps set a foundation of math understanding for our students. Based on the research of Thomas Carpenter et al. in Cognitively Guided Instruction, there are 15 types of single-step word problems that involve addition and subtraction alone! In order for us to facilitate our students’ navigation through exploring all these problem types, we must first become familiar with them ourselves.

This is a paid course and will be two hours of instruction delivered in one session on March 12. If you are unable to attend the live session, the recording will be emailed to all enrolled participants. To see all the details about what’s included in the course go HERE.

Beyond Answers: Exploring Mathematical Practices and Developing Mathematical Reasoning with All Students – $97

with Mike Flynn

Students develop a love and appreciation for mathematics when teachers value the process as much as, if not more than, the product. Getting answers certainly has its place but it’s often the least interesting part of the work in math class. In this course, we will unpack specific methods teachers can use to engage students in mathematical practices and explore rich tasks that help them develop a deeper understanding of the number system and operations. Participants in this session will engage as adult learner in activities designed to mirror the experiences of K-5 students so they gain the perspective of a learner involved in productive struggle. By experiencing what it’s like to be a student engaged in the mathematical practices, teachers will develop a better understanding of the practices and how they can leverage them in the classroom to elevate students’ interest and sense-making. We will then debrief the experience and consider the instructional decisions and teacher moves that made the work interesting and increased participants’ motivation to dig deeply into the ideas. Participants will leave with a number of frameworks they can use with their students that take advantage of existing resources and do not require a complete restructuring of their math classrooms. They will also leave with a much deeper understanding of the mathematics taught at their grade level and a greater understanding of how to support students in developing powerful mathematical reasoning.

This is a paid course and will be four hours of instruction delivered in two 2-hour session on March 5 and March 25. If you are unable to attend one of the live sessions, the recording will be emailed to all enrolled participants. To see all the details about what’s included in the course go HERE.
